By the end of this lesson, students will understand what grammar is, why it is important, and recognize the basic building blocks of the English language (words, sentences, punctuation). This lesson also sets the tone for the rest of the course.
Grammar is a set of rules that helps us put words together to make sentences.
It tells us:
What words mean
How they work in a sentence
How to make our meaning clear when we speak or write
Without grammar, our sentences would be messy or confusing!
✅ It helps us write correctly
✅ It helps us speak clearly
✅ It helps others understand us easily
📢 Imagine saying:
“dog eat” vs. “The dog is eating.”
The second one follows grammar rules and makes sense!
Let’s look at the three most important parts:
Words are the smallest units of grammar. Every sentence is made of words.
Examples: dog, run, blue, school, happy, is
A sentence is a group of words that tells a complete thought.
It always:
Starts with a capital letter
Ends with a punctuation mark (like a period)
Examples:
✅ “The cat is sleeping.”
❌ “Sleeping the cat.” (Doesn’t follow grammar)
Punctuation marks show pauses, stops, questions, or excitement.
. (Period) – ends a sentence
? (Question mark) – asks something
! (Exclamation mark) – shows excitement
I like pizza. 🍕
Do you like pizza?
Wow! That’s a big pizza!
